Spider veins
Spider veins are very fine, dilated veins with a maximum diameter of 1 mm that run superficially in the skin. They are visible to the naked eye as net- or fan-shaped reddish-bluish lines. They primarily appear on the legs, often starting in early adulthood and worsening with age.
Spider veins are usually harmless from a medical perspective but are considered cosmetically unpleasant.
However, spider veins can also be a symptom of invisible deeper varicose veins. Therefore, before treatment – particularly in cases of more pronounced symptoms- evaluation of the venous system using duplex sonography should be conducted.
