Compression therapy

Compression therapy involves the application of controlled external pressure on the tissue, and consequently on the underlying venous system. This pressure reduces the diameter of the veins, which improves blood circulation by increasing the velocity of blood flow, helping to prevent venous thrombosis. Additionally, the reduced diameter allows the venous valves to close more effectively. As a result, blood flow toward the heart is supported and improved, while also stimulating the lymphatic system. Commonly used compression therapies are compression socks and stockings.
