Phlebitis (Thrombophlebitis)

Phlebitis refers to a local inflammation in a superficial vein. This condition is often accompanied by thrombosis (a blood clot in the vessel) and is then referred to as thrombophlebitis. The symptoms of phlebitis include redness, warmth, and pain in the area of the affected superficial vein.

If this occurs in a varicose vein, it is referred to as varicophlebitis.
Common causes include prolonged sitting and standing, inflammatory processes in the body, or post-traumatic occurrences, such as direct trauma, blood sampling, intravenous injections, or the presence of venous catheters.
In approximately one-third of all superficial venous thromboses, there is also a corresponding thrombosis in the deep veins. Therefore, a specialist examination that includes a duplex sonography is recommended.
