Edema

Edema refers refers to a palpable swelling caused by an increased accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissue. The causes of edema can be diverse.
Peripheral edema, which is caused by  a loss of function of the venous valves, is referred to as phlebedema. This can occur in cases of phlebitis and deep vein thrombosis of the leg.

Chronic edema occurs with chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, or post-thrombotic syndrome.

There are also lymphatic- and lipedemas, which can appear independently or in combination with one another.
