Leg ulcer (Ulcus cruris)

An ulcus cruris is a chronic open wound or ulceration that is typically located on the lower leg and/or around the ankle area and persists for more than 4 weeks. Venous leg ulcers are the result of chronic venous disease. When the transportation of blood back to the heart is no longer functioning properly, venous congestion increases. This results in elevated pressure on the tissue and in the small blood vessels. Consequently, the skin becomes harder, and blood circulation decreases. These changes lead to the ulcus cruris, which can arise even from minor injuries. Approximately 50% of cases of leg ulcers are attributable to chronic venous disease and therefore require phlebological evaluation.
